Snakes are a predatory animal. They are likely on your property because they have located a food source on or near your property that can provide them a reliable diet. To help control snakes, you also need to control what the snakes prey upon. Venomous snakes like Rattlesnakes and Copperhead Snakes are the 2 most dangerous native snakes in DFW area that one could likely come across.

Home Remedies for Snake Control

  • Do not use mothballs. The active ingredient in mothballs is naphthalene or paradichlorobenzene. These chemicals are toxic to insects and mammals, but are not effective against snakes (San Julian, 1985). Naphthalene may cause illness in humans and have been linked to death in children. Using mothballs outside your home violates product labels and puts your family and pets at risk. Do not use mothballs.
  • Do not use sulfur. Many snake repellant products claim that sulfur in their products will keep snakes away. Unfortunately, sulfur is not effective at deterring snakes and is a waste of money (San Julian, 1985).
  • Remove Clutter. By keeping your property clear of clutter, it reduces places where snakes are likely to hide. Clutter comes in many forms though. Shrubs low to the ground, or dead leaves under hedges provide adequate cover and humidity for a perfect snake problem to arise.
  • Lawn Maintenance. Property management seems to be a never-ending chore, especially after it rains. However, keeping a well-maintained lawn reduces the likelihood that snakes will want to stay on your property. They prefer tall vegetation over short vegetation. This is typically because taller vegetation tends to draw in more pest problem in general as this provides adequate cover for nesting sites, allows for seeds to be produces, and holds moisture.
  • Seal home. Sealing your homes cracks and voids and help ensure snakes stay out. Weep holes along the foundation are there to allow moisture in the walls to dry so DO NOT SEAL these with something that impedes the ability to function. Some snakes do have the ability to climb. In addition to sealing along the foundation, sealing along the roof line is necessary as well for complete peace of mind. If you are not comfortable with ladder work or if sealing the home is something you would rather have someone trained take care of, Call Currin Pest Control to Keep Snakes Out of Your Home.
